The CDFW Central Region 4 is seeking motivated staff, who are organized, experienced in wildlife, plant ecology, and hydrology, and that have strong writing, communication, and analytical skills to assist with environmental reviews and permitting with a focus on the renewable energy industry (solar and wind).
The incumbent will serve in the Habitat Conservation Program as part of a dedicated team focused on renewable energy projects that will coordinate with CDFW staff and renewable energy industry project proponents and their consultants to assist with consultations for permit issuance. The incumbent will also be tasked with development of Lake and Streambed Alteration Agreements, California Endangered Species Act and Western Joshua Tree Conservation Act Incidental Take Permits, and will review California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) documents.
Duties will require general knowledge of California fish and wildlife resources, ecological principles, lake and stream processes, applicable permitting and environmental laws, CDFW administrative procedures and policies, and understanding applicable legislation pertaining to the renewable energy industry. The incumbent will apply this knowledge to their review of permit applications and CEQA documents and will participate in challenging and complicated consultations on these topics. Public contacts made in the course of this work are highly sensitive and involve a wide variety of stakeholders. The Environmental Scientist staff, would be located in Fresno and perform under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor to work in a collaborative setting on renewable energy projects.
Region 4-Central includes 12 counties (Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Stanislaus, Tulare and Tuolumne Counties) including the mountains, coast, and desert areas and contains numerous listed and sensitive species and a variety of habitats.

The position requires the use of a computer and the ability to sit for long periods of time at a desk; the completion of office tasks that require sitting, standing, and walking to other locations; ability to lift moderate to heavy weighted boxes of office supplies and work equipment; and attendance and participation in virtual and in-person meetings. The position may require travel throughout the State including overnight travel, early mornings, late nights, hiking over uneven and possibly steep or wet terrain, physically demanding work over long hours, use of 4-wheel drive vehicle (including all-terrain vehicle), and work in inclement weather. A valid California’s driver’s license is required to drive to meetings and field sites. The position may require the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff.
This position is based out of CDFW's Central Region office in Fresno. Partial telework from a home office may be considered following an introductory period to the position.
