Position Summary
Western Horseman seeks an experienced editorial Art Director with digital and print design skills to oversee the planning, communication and execution of all art and design functions for Western Horseman 's portfolio of print and digital products. This position will design, coordinate, curate and manage all Western Horseman ® brand visuals across website, social media, live event and print media.
These duties would include editorial layout and page design of the print magazine including covers, photo corrections and imposition in collaboration with the editorial team. Additionally, the Art Director would work with the marketing and sales teams to create powerful storytelling brand campaigns, pop-up live display visuals, social media elements and sales promotion materials.
Essential Functions and Key Responsibilities:
· Serve as the Art Director for the Western Horseman brand across all media. This includes collaborating with the editorial team and brand director to establish the overall look and visual brand of the publications and marketing materials as well as interpret ideas into graphic design concepts, develop templates and executive high-quality, polished layouts
· All Editorial page designs for twelve (12) editions of Western Horseman magazine plus One (1) annual Western Horseman Calendar
· Work cohesively with the management team to support the vision for the Western Horseman brand, remembering who its readers are and creating graphic content and covers with the individual platform's audience and demographic in mind
· Work collaboratively with the management team to lead in the development of strategic planning, branding initiatives and product expansion to support the business objectives of the organization.
· Uphold the mission, brand, tone and voice of Western Horseman in its portfolio of products and marketing materials, both print and digital
· Create print and digital content and/or ads to engage the portfolio's readership, showcase the community, and achieve audience development goals
· Work closely with Editors, Writers, Director, Team, and Production Director to determine written, illustrated and photography needs for each issue
· Ensure monthly print, digital and marketing deadlines are met and deliver materials on or before deadlines is critical
· Organize files and track creative elements along the process and keep up with where files stand along the design flow and production process
· Work with corporate production team, printers and other production personnel to ensure timely upload and quality of publications
· Represent the brand and its products in the community outside traditional office hours, while building and supporting strategic partnerships
· Contribute and brainstorm ideas for layout, design, and process to improve future brand needs
· Provide advertising sales support by creating media kits, sales materials, spec ads and efficient file-sharing methods
Education/Skills Requirements
· Bachelor's degree in graphic design or other related degree or equivalent photography, media, publishing, editorial experience
· Strong project management experience with the ability to juggle multiple deadlines and projects simultaneously is a must
· Demonstrates understanding of and willingness to learn current digital and social media practices including websites, digital ad design and social media best practices
· Confident knowledge and use of Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok
· Self-starter, with confident leadership skills and positive, problem-solving abilities who can work independently with minimal supervision. Strong ability and skillset to effectively work well within a team environment and be open to change
· Innovative mindset with superb time management and strong communication skills
· Knowledge of ranching, horses, rodeo, and a Western way of life is a plus, but not required
Qualifications:
· Minimum 10 years of experience in professional graphic design; editorial or publication experience preferred with adept talent at digital, video and social media deliverables
· Working knowledge of commercial-printing and web publishing processes and previous experience with project management software
· Highly motivated individual with experience in print magazines, social media, photography, storytelling, writing, developing and managing social media content, along with related branding, marketing and advertising solutions. Editorial or publication experience preferred.
· Strong knowledge of the digital and social media landscape
· Knowledge of WordPress, HTML and CSS
· Adept at Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator and InCopy, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Express, Premiere, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams etc.
Work Environment
This position operates in a professional office environment in Fort Worth, Texas. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
