Job Description: Lead Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Urgent Care

Position Summary:

The Lead Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (NP) for our Virginia-based Pediatric Urgent Care is a vital leadership role responsible for providing high-quality, efficient, and compassionate pediatric urgent care during our operational hours of 10 AM to 10 PM. This role encompasses clinical leadership, patient care, team supervision, and operational support. The Lead NP will ensure the delivery of exceptional care to pediatric patients and their families while fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.

Responsibilities:

Clinical Leadership:

  • Provide expert clinical leadership and guidance to the nursing and support staff.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for all staff.
  • Develop and implement clinical protocols and guidelines specific to pediatric urgent care.
  • Ensure adherence to established standards of care and best practices.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and outcomes.
  • Perform physical examinations and assessments of pediatric patients presenting with acute illnesses and injuries.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, including laboratory and imaging studies.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans, including medication management and patient education. 
  • Perform minor procedures, such as wound care, suturing, and foreign body removal.
  • Document patient encounters accurately and comprehensively in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Collaborate with on-call physicians and other healthcare providers as needed.

Patient Care:

  • Provide direct patient care to pediatric patients in an urgent care setting.
  • Assess and manage a wide range of pediatric acute illnesses and injuries.
  • Ensure patient and family satisfaction through compassionate and effective communication.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and follow-up care.

Team Supervision:

  • Supervise and mentor nursing and support staff.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to staff.
  • Address staff concerns and resolve conflicts effectively.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels and efficient workflow.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment.

Operational Support:

  • Assist with the development and implementation of operational policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and manage inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards specific to Virginia.
  • Participate in quality assurance and risk management activities.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Work to ensure that the facility is clean, and ready for operations.

Other Duties:

  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Stay current on pediatric urgent care best practices and advancements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the medical director or practice administrator.


Qualifications:

  • Current and unrestricted Nurse Practitioner (NP) license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) with significant pediatric experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in pediatric urgent care or emergency medicine.
  • Advanced knowledge of pediatric acute illnesses and injuries.
  • Proficiency in performing minor procedures.
  • Excellent clinical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications.
  • Ability to work shifts within the hours of 10am-10pm.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a leadership role.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement methodologies.
  • Experience with billing and coding.


Working Conditions:

  • Shifts between 10 AM and 10 PM, including weekends and some holidays.
  • Fast-paced and demanding environment.
  • Exposure to infectious diseases and other potential hazards.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
