The Coalition of Unions was organized in 1996 by local unions within Kaiser Permanente to secure better contracts through united action. To win the strongest voice for workers in the industry, the Coalition proposed a labor-management partnership giving workers unit-based workplace democracy, a voice in strategic decisions at the highest levels, a growth strategy that has almost doubled the size of our membership, the best wages and working conditions in health care – and the best health care for Kaiser Permanente members and patients. The Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions (CKPU) seeks a visionary and strategic leader for its Executive Director role. The incumbent will lead member unions in a united effort to improve the lives of Kaiser Permanente (KP) employees in accordance with the organization’s National Agreement. In this unique partnership with Kaiser Permanente, the Executive Director will build and maintain relationships with member union leaders, as well as within the Labor Management Partnership (LMP). This position serves as the chief administrator for the organization and in partnership with Coalition local union leaders, acts as the Coalition spokesperson in national bargaining with the employer.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In partnership with the Executive Board, Union leaders and Coalition staff, develop and execute strategic plans aligned with the organizational goals, programs, and priorities.
  • Provide visionary leadership to Union members and Coalition staff, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission and accountability for the success of the organization. Advise Executive Board/Union Presidents of disputes and barriers to the partnership & craft potential solutions.
  • In coordination with the Executive Board and Trustees, ensure responsible fiscal and operational management of the organization’s multi-million-dollar budget.
  • Serve as the Coalition Director & as a CKPU representative, speaking publicly at conferences, national bargaining, and to the media in delivering the accomplishments, as well as challenges, of the organization.
  • Cultivate relationships with Kaiser management in advancing National Agreement deliverables and act as a representative of the Coalition in various high-level Union, KP management and LMP meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the CKPU Executive Board

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Extensive & varied experience in the labor movement. Familiarity with working in coalitions, coordinated bargaining or other labor-management partnerships.
  • Experience working for an Executive Board and ensuring their involvement at multiple levels.
  • Experience supervising and developing a large team of staff including the leadership of experienced/senior level teams. Ability to successfully oversee an organization of nearly 20 full-time staff and build a strong culture of partnership, accountability and successful results.
  • Demonstrated success in leading high-level, complex negotiations of collective bargaining; preferably in both traditional and interest-based environments.
  • Experience in union organizing, running successful campaigns, and executing strategic plans to meet organizational objectives.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Extensive experience in effective facilitation of groups and can unite divergent interests to create productive outcomes. Ability to build a united team.
  • Strong commitment to advance racial justice and equality; personally & throughout the work of the CKPU & LMP.
  • Commitment to personal development and growth; ability to receive feedback and integrate it.
  • Excellent verbal, written & public speaking communications skills that communicate the organization’s mission and vision.
  • Experience in the health care field or with healthcare workers, preferred.

This position is accountable to the CKPU Executive Board and involves extensive national travel, long hours and weekends.

Salary range is $176,000-$185,000 DOE, benefit package including AFL-CIO defined pension benefit plan, employer paid medical/dental/vision insurance, and 401(k) match. Paid time off including holidays, vacation, and sick leave.
